I keep thinking about chai. Not the pre-packaged kind. Strong black tea with ginger and cloves and peppercorn, maybe cinnamon too. And milk and sugar. I keep thinking about that, but to make it I’d have to go home.
Instead, I am sitting in a cafe drinking a cafe au lait. Billie Holiday is singing “Stormy Weather.” It’s pure gray outside. The weather is filling up all the negative space with hints of a thunderstorm.
Yesterday I went to the supermarket, splashing in my flip-flops through the puddle of a parking lot. I shivered in the aisles. And dashed back to my car, flinging water everywhere, while everyone else waited under the eaves for the storm to cease.
Back home, plastic bags dripping water onto the floor, I could have made chai. Instead I took a shower, and waited to be in this cafe today, next to my friends, thinking about spices simmered in black tea and the smell of ginger.

Good to see you getting your writing chops together again.
Comment by Fish Noir Foul September 4, 2007 @ 11:25 pmFunny thing is I empathize with you even though I wouldn’t drink that tea on a bet:)
You don’t like tea or you don’t like the spices? Glad you commiserate all the same
Comment by bluedragonfly September 5, 2007 @ 12:02 amI drink the generic tea they give you with the no4 combination plate down to the local Chinese cuisine emporium. That’s about it.
No sugar. Don’t need it.
No milk. Milk & tea? I thought those English novelists were pulling my leg. Can’t imagine milk in tea.
Ginger & peppercorn on steak, maybe.
Cinnamon & cloves in pumpkin pie, for sure.
The idea of my desires being out of phase with reality- even on the most quotidian level- yeah, I get that.
Comment by Fish Noir Foul September 6, 2007 @ 11:52 pmHey, you like what you like. And you don’t know what you’re missing. And I’m a vegetarian and have never eaten meat. Clearly I don’t know what I’m missing either…Ah well.
