Sand back home is larger, thicker, more identifiable. Here in Texas sand sticks to you like dust and gets stuck in corners of suitcases and behind your ears. Sand from New England is tangible. And so, as I waited to board the airplane at Logan yesterday, I put my hand in my coat pocket. Inside I discovered small grains of Nantucket sand, making their way into my fingernails. And it surprised me how comforting it felt to be carrying these little reminders back to where I live now. So much so that I can’t yet bring myself to clean the pocket out.

I bought a black dress at Banana Republic for too much money and realized I can’t wear it where I’m going. It’ll be too cold there. Right now weather.com says it’s 31 degrees. The wind will cut right through the thin fabric and I’ll have to admit that I’m longer capable of packing for winter weather in New England. My friend made me chocolate mint cookies because I was sick all weekend long, my nose chapped from blowing it so much. I tried to keep studying for the GREs, getting emotional over math questions about how if you have 1 pizza and 8 possible toppings how many combinations of 3 can you come up with. I fly out tomorrow morning and I feel like I’m just wading through the hours until then.
